Product growth Using Object-Oriented Software Technology

OBJECT-ORIENTED SOFTWARE TECHNOLOGY is rapidly changing the way software connected views are being designed and bring to maturityed and the way we think about and use computer through the last eight years HP has been active in the research and use of this technology. HP has complet several produces that use an object-oriented approach, and the technology continues to be used in of the present day product development. The essential idea in the object-oriented approach is that data and measures are represented in a pile called an object, and the data is simply accessible through the procedures contained in the motive Also, objects are the basic building stiffens for any system designed using an object-oriented approach. The reason for of the like kind interest in this technology is that it provides a productive and powerful paradigm for software unfolding and it addresses such issues as digest reuse and software maintainability.

Since object-oriented technology requires a of the present day way of thinking about software unravelling some questions exist regarding its origin, its difference from established software evolution methodologies, and the advantages its proffers the developer and the close user. This paper addresses these questions by dint of presenting a brief history and about basics of object-oriented technology, and a description of the design and progressive growth of a product from HP's Lake Steven Instrument Division that uses an object-oriented language.

History

Computer science researchers started to contemplate at object-oriented concepts in the late 1960 The universal of data hiding, in which data is accessed alone through a well-defined interface and the data composition is unknown to the accessing routines, formed the foundation of the particular concept. This was followed at the development of abstract data archetype systems. Abstract data emblems implement the data hiding conception and include local procedures, which have exclusive knowledge of the data configurations within the data type and therefore perform all operations forward the local data. individual of the first languages to explore and implement object-oriented universals was Simula67. Simula67 was lay opened in the 1960s in Norway for modeling and simulation programs. Fig. 1 indicates a chronology of object-oriented languages since 1960 With the exception of Eiffel all of these languages had their origins in a non-object-oriented language. Also, because the technology is still developing there are several competing object-oriented languages and no single approach has become a standard.

Object-oriented programming gaines popularity with the introduction of the Smalltalk language. [1] Smalltalk was originally implemented as part of the research work done at Xerox Corporation's Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) in the 1970 and early 1980 The language attempted to take the part of everything from individual bits to whole hypothesiss as objects. In 1981 HP Laboratories ported Smalltalk to an HP research computer as part of an investigation of personal computer environments. [2] The fine granularity of its implementation was adequate for research views but because of poor performance Smalltalk was impractical forward generally available computers. However, many of the ideas demonstrated by dint of Smalltalk are still models for today's object-oriented regularitys and Smalltalk is being commercially bring to maturityed on today's more powerful workstations.

by the agency of 1983 several research and commercial organizations, including HP were prototyping practical implementations of object-oriented languages. in the greatest degree of these implementations use a preprocessor that translates object-oriented programs into a conventional language like as C or Pascal. This permits a hybrid approach in which the developer can select to program in C, Pascal, or on a level assembly language when appropriate. The idea is to provide an evolutionary rather than revolutionary path toward object-oriented programming. The designer is able to fall back forward established methods if the object-oriented approach causes problems

The artificial intelligence community has produc several object-oriented languages. The language Flavors inspired a series of languages leading to the universal Lisp Object System (CLOS). CLO includes object-oriented extensions to the habitual Lisp system and is primarily an evolving platform used by the agency of researchers. It is being designed as part of the ANSI X3J13 often met with Lisp standardization process. HP played a character in the invention and disentanglement of CLOS. The Standard Artificial Intelligence Language (SAIL) was based primarily onward Algol and evolved into a language called Mainsail which was used in the growth of HP's Electronic Design System

Pascal has been used as a foundation for several object-oriented languages. Additions made to Pascal to implement an object-oriented universal called classes resulted in the language Clascal and more freshly Object Pascal. Clascal was used to cause to grow the Lisa computer from Apple Computer Pascal was used for an early implementation of HP's Softnet which influenced HP's version of Objective-C. HP's Objective-C modifications provided facilities to design plans in which customers could add just discovered features without requiring any changes to the original body including compiling and linking. HP's use of this modified version of Objective-C is screened later in this paper when the evolution of HP VISTA is described.
