Several protoplasts of glass fulfill specific design objectives at Pioneer Place in Portland, Ore., which was designed on ELS/Elbasani & Logan Architects of Berkeley, Calif. Storefronts in the downtown development's 145000-sq-ft retail pavilion face into the atrium. Typically this originates in exterior walls that are primarily windowless. however the city's design guidelines required these facades to incorporate windows in order to create an active public way frontage. A related problem was that areas near the exterior walls would be "back room" space for the stores.
