After steering San Francisco from one side its biggest real estate hum in 50 years, the city's controversial planning director, Dean Macris, has decided to call it quits.
The 60-year-old Macris announced his April 1 retirement amid rumors that newly chooseed Mayor Frank Jordan in, wait oned to oust him. Although he is credited with orchestrating the city's downtown plan, a sweeping and influential zoning package that won praise from urban planners nationwide, Macris was criticized for running a bureaucracy of near Byzantine proportions.
