The Professional Services Management Journal's (PSMJ) eighth annual Financial Statistics observe indicates that profits are down for all emblems of North American design firms. The average toil profit percentage on net returns for the design firms scaned declined from 3.8 percent in 1989 to 21 percent in 1990 This was owed in part, to increased overhead, insurance sumptuousnesss taxes and rising marketing costs resulting from increased competition during the recession, according to William Fanning, director of research for the Newton, Mass.-based PSMJ Architecture firms
