Aquatic addition meld diverse environments The designers of the just discovered 180,000-sq.-ft. pavilion for cold-water mammals at Chicago's John G Shedd Aquarium faced a trio of challenges. They were required to treat the aquarium's prominent lakefront site sensitively, to come up to face to face the life support requirements of the mammals it showcases and to proffer visitors a pleasing atmosphere. The $41 million addition, whose features include a 2-million-gallon mammal loch and a 1,000-seat visitor gallery, was built forward 1.8 acres of landfill at the interest of Lake Michigan.
